Hesse's early works, during the 1960s, were influenced by the minimalist art movement, which emphasized geometric forms and industrial materials. However, Hesse began to diverge from minimalist tendencies by introducing organic and personal elements into her sculptures. She was deeply influenced by her experiences with depression, the trauma of fleeing Nazi Germany, and her struggles with illness, which she later translated into her art.
