While outdoors, we are constantly dealing with inconveniences such as noise, traffic, and natural factors including rain, storms or strong sunlight. In this studio students will address these challenges head on by designing and building various shelters to protect people from these various environmental factor while navigating the city.

This studio will give students the opportunity to make a difference in their environment, where they will determine the areas that are suitable for intervention, considering all the challenges involved. Projects could focus on the design of sheltering structures, with focus on their materiality and resiliency. Additionally, issues such as renewable energy, recyclable and reusable material, and passive environmental conditioning will be incporated into the interventions.

Students at Karam House will start by studying the city and identifying areas of intervention. From there, they will begin to prototype these structures and test them for durability and effectiveness, finally arriving at a prototype to be installed in the public space and used by the inhabitants of Reyhanli.
