Desk Design Challenge - Part I - Syria

MID-REVIEW

Prompt

Feedback is a crucial step in the design process. It exposes you to new ideas, methods, and techniques for developing your ideas further. Continuous feedback throughout the design process also creates a collaborative studio culture, where ideas are shared across projects, which leads to more exciting, developed, and innovative ideas!

Instructions

In this assignment, you will review the concept statements, sketches, and prototypes posted by your peers in Response Tab of this assignment and provide feedback to three teams.

You and your peers will consider this feedback as your teams decide how to proceed with their final project. Be thoughtful in your feedback, and refer to the guide below when giving feedback to your peers:

** What to Offer Feedback On

  1. Do the prototypes and sketches reinforce the group's concept statement? Do the physical ideas accomplish the project goal? If yes, how so? If not, how might they better accomplish this goal?
  2. Does the project encourage play that involves both adults and children? If not, how could the project better accommodate one of these groups?
  3. Does the design language (i.e. shapes, colors, materials being used) encourage a playful environment for 3-5 year olds?
  4. Do you have any suggestions on materials, joinery techniques, or assembly methos that might be suitable for this design?

How to Give Useful Feedback

Feedback should never have mean intentions! You can be positive and critical at the same time.

Be as specific as you can.

What kind of feedback would you find helpful if it were your project? Try to give the type of feedback that you would like to receive.

Always elaborate with WHY. Instead of just saying, "your idea is great," explain what part of their project you like, and why you think it is interesting.

Ask questions! If something doesn't make sense to you, ask a question about that part of the project or idea. This is a great method for getting someone to think about new ideas, different perspectives, and new approaches.

SPRINT BRIEF

Product Sketching Lab

SPRINT BRIEF

In this sprint, we will learn how product designers use sketching as a technical thinking tool. We will treat sketching as a way to explore ideas, understand objects, and communicate how products work not as a way to make polished drawings.

We will use fast, clear sketches to think through form, scale, and construction. By the end of the sprint, we will be more confident using sketching to explain real, buildable product ideas.

Idea Jam

Group

Brainstorming

Description

In this brainstorming activity, we will generate the ideas that will define our group project concepts. We will begin by creating individual lists of ideas, then share all ideas as a group on a dedicated "Pin-up Board" using writing, sketching, post-it notes, and plenty of productive discussions.

Deliverables

At the end of this activity, the group will have created a comprehensive collective brainstorming board. Using this resource, the Studio Facilitator will:

  • Allocate time to pair partners for each project (Project Pairs).

  • Create Project Folders before the next studio session.

  • Note: The next studio session will begin by sharing the selected project concepts and announcing work partnerships.

The Pin-up Board Setup

To ensure the board reflects the "Rules of Collective Brainstorming," please divide it or use the following tools:

  • "Quick Sketches" Section: Drawings don't need to be perfect; the goal is to communicate the idea.

  • "Wunder-links" Section: Where we draw lines connecting furniture, toys, and spaces.

  • Colored Post-it Notes: Use colors to distinguish between (Furniture Type, Function, Target Audience).

Precedent

Research

The Task

In this Precedent Research activity, we will investigate desk and furniture designs through five key design elements: Ease of Construction, Durability, Affordability, Function and User Needs, and Safety and Comfort. Each group will focus on one of these elements, researching examples and gathering observations, ideas, and strategies. Students will share their findings on a sticky note board, establishing a collective reference bank to serve as a foundation for later brainstorming.

Deliverables

Under the "Response" tab within this activity, submit your group's findings in the form of a short slideshow. Also, be prepared to contribute key findings, examples, and design ideas to the shared sticky note board during the activity.

(Slides).
