Idea Jam

Group

Brainstorming

Description

In this brainstorming activity, we will generate the ideas that will define the concepts of our group projects. We will start by generating idea lists individually, then as a group share all ideas on a pin-up brainstorming board with writing, drawing, post-it notes, and a lot of discussion.

Instructions

See slide 10

Deliverables

At the end of this activity, the group will have created a collective pin-up brainstorming board. With this resource, the studio facilitator should take time to partner project pairs and create project folders before the next studio session. The next studio session will begin with the sharing of project concepts and project partnerships.

Prompt

Research, test, and analyze various types of video games to understand their themes, mechanics, and components. Use these insights to later design your own video game!

Instructions

  1. Test Video Games:
Play a few games on CoSpaces to understand the potential of the tool. Explore different types of games such as platformers, puzzle games, and strategy games.

  2. Select a Game Type:
Choose a video game that you would like to research and analyze further. Focus on one that interests you the most and features game mechanics you’d like to incorporate into your own design.

  3. Analyze the Game:
Study the game’s theme, mechanics, and components in-depth. Use the provided template to break down the following:

    • Type/Theme: What is the concept of the game?
    • Game Components: What are the key components (characters, environments, objects) that define the game world?
    • Mechanics: Analyze the gameplay elements and rules. How do the mechanics work together? Focus on:
      • Movement Mechanics: How does the character move? (e.g., running, jumping, flying, climbing)
      • Interactions & Building: How do players interact with the world? Can they build or modify the environment (e.g., crafting, cooking)?
      • Dynamic Events: Does the game feature random or scheduled events like day-night cycles or environmental hazards?
    • Create a quick presentation to summarize your findings,.
  4. Present & Build a Game Library:
Each student will present their slide deck to the class. This will contribute to a collective library of video game concepts and mechanics for the studio, showcasing diverse designs.

Deliverables

In the 'responses tab' -> Post a blog summarizing your analysis of a video game, covering its theme, game components/mechanics, and relevant images.

Instructions:

  1. Download the Template: Start by downloading the provided character design template.
  2. Fill Out the Template: Answer the questions in the template to flesh out your character’s details. The questions will cover various aspects such as:
    • Name: What is your character’s name?
    • Age: How old is your character?
    • Background: What is your character’s backstory?
    • Personality: What are the key traits of your character?
    • Appearance: How does your character look? (Include details like hair color, eye color, clothing, etc.)
    • Abilities: Does your character have any special skills or powers?
    • Goals and Motivations: What drives your character? What are their main goals?
    • Challenges: What obstacles or challenges do they face?

3.Draw Your Character: Based on the information you’ve filled out in the template, create a detailed drawing of your character.

Deliverables:
