The Tree Of Identity

Hany Elşeyh

When we walk through the streets of ancient cities, many questions come up to our minds. How did our ancestors manage to construct these buildings without advanced building techniques? How did they build these tall towers in castles and palaces without them falling or swaying? How did they manage to open such large windows in walls made of small stone blocks? How can a roof made of wooden logs stay flat without collapsing over our heads? Why are mosques and huge buildings covered with domes? How can a person build walls in an environment where stones are not available? How were they designing bridges to move between mountains or cross over rivers? How are the flat slabs between floors made?

In this studio, we will find an answer to these questions by studying traditional architectural elements and their construction techniques to understand the relationship between the properties of each material and the human requirements that the building meets. The students will choose one of these elements they find the most interesting (stone wall, mud wall, wood wall, stone arch, stone tower, wooden bridge, stone bridge, pitched wooden ceiling, plank ceiling, stone dome, wooden window, etc.) to analyze and study its properties, the construction techniques used, and their relationship to the property of the material. They will then search within themselves for the meaning of this element for them and design their own small structure that reflects their conception of themselves, and what they see in themselves as features and aspirations, dreams, and perhaps, memories… The students will choose materials - available to them at home - that they identify with, and choose the appropriate construction technology fit for its properties.
