Illustration is often overlooked as a medium for children’s books and cartoons and, in spite of that, it has the capacity to engage with complex topics and real-world problems in ways that are empathetic, surprising, and nuanced. To prove this theory, we will engage with the world and its social issues through visual art.

We will explore the capacity of illustration and sequential art (comics) to raise awareness on social issues, to engage with the stories of individuals who are affected by social issues, and to visualize the utopian worlds that we want to manifest, in which those issues are solved. 

In this studio, we will each pick a social issue that is particularly meaningful and important to us as individuals. We will continue to research and make art about that social issue throughout the class. We will focus on the relationship between images and words, beginning by imagining a large-scale mural with both an image and a slogan that would educate about "our" social issue. Then we will move forward to create an in-depth comic that visualizes both a story about a character being affected by the issue in the present day, and a future in which the problem is resolved.

في هذا الاستديو، سنختار كل قضية اجتماعية ذات مغزى ومهم بشكل خاص بالنسبة لنا كأفراد. سنستمر في البحث وصنع الفن حول هذه القضية الاجتماعية خلال كلّ الفصل. سنركز على العلاقة بين الصور والكلمات، بدايةً من خلال تصور لوحة جدارية كبيرة الحجم بها صورة وشعار من شأنه أن يثقف "قضيتنا" الاجتماعية. ثم سنمضي قدمًا لإنشاء قصص مصورة متعمقة تدور حول شخصية تتأثر بالقضية في الوقت الحاضر، ومستقبل يتم فيه حل المشكلة.
