A puppet made from intricately cut material teeters across the paper screen. Light seeps through its translucent surface, bringing the painted details alive: the bright moments of color, and the patterned holes allowing pinpricks of light to shine through. This is a description of one of the earliest forms of entertainment: Puppet Shows, specifically shadow puppet shows. Light and shadow have been used to tell stories for centuries, and this medium is especially fitting because most stories deal with the fight between good and evil, right and wrong-- light and dark. In this class, we will simplify the age-old medium of shadow puppetry, and bring it into contemporary times by compressing the series of moments of a shadow puppet show into a single art piece: a  papercut lightbox! 

In this class, we will dive deep into storytelling, focusing on a type of story that shows up in every culture across the globe: the folktale!  Folktales have been used to create superstitions, to connect with culture and history, to inspire laughter, to entertain, to warn children of danger, and have even been used to hide meanings about social issues. These odd, often unexpected little narratives have stood the test of time; far from fading into history, folktales are the inspiration for many contemporary movies, books, and art. We will bring folktales into the modern-day by contextualizing them in our own lives, each picking a folktale that speaks to you personally. Is it a silly story your older sibling told you when you were younger, or one that your grandmother read to you from a dusty old book? Or maybe a story with a character who you relate to? 

To focus on shape, posing, paper-cutting, and silhouettes, we will create a stencil as an opening exercise, and an in-depth storyboard as a follow-up assignment to explore the narrative structure, dialogue, and cinematic strategies for visual storytelling. Then, we will preserve a moment of this story in a papercut lightbox, trying to freeze all the energy of the story into a single illuminated image. Hopefully, throughout this process, we will also illuminate things about our culture, history, traditions, and the power and humor that can live within a single story.

القصص الشعبية والحكايات هي نصّ لا نعرف مؤلفه، ويتم إيصاله شفوياً. تستند لوقائع حدثت بالفعل واكتسبت نوعاً من البطولة أو الخيال، هذا النوع من الحكايات المتداول والمتوارث جيلاً بعد جيل، هو مرتبط بالعادات والتقاليد. هذه الحكايات التي سمعناها من أجدادنا وجداتنا.

خلقت هذه الحكايات الشعبية لتأليف الخرافات أحياناً، وللتواصل مع الثقافة والتاريخ أحياناً أخرى، بالاضافة لعامل الضحك والترفيه وتحذير الأطفال من الخطر، بل وقد تم استخدامها لإخفاء المعاني حول القضايا الاجتماعية. هذا الكم الهائل من الحكايات تعرّف عن ثقافة وماضي المدينة والبلد.

صمدت هذه الروايات الصغيرة الغريبة في كثير من الأحيان أمام اختبارات الزمن، وبالتالي دورنا هو أن نحافظ عليها ونخبر عنها جيلاً بعد جيل. ولتوثيق هذه الحكايات يحتاج الكثير من الخبرة والشجاعة والافكار الجميلة للحفاظ عليها مع الغزو التكنولوجي الذي يغطي عليها.

يهدف هذا الاستوديو الى حماية وتوثيق تراث الحكاية الشعبية من خلال الضوء والظل وحفظ ايقونات القصة ومعرفة كيفية اعادة سردها. سنجلب هذه القصص للواقع مرة أخرى ونعيد سردها 

سيقوم الطلاب في هذا الاستوديو باحتيار حكاية أو خرافة شعبية ما، اشتهرت في مدينته او تاريخه. ربما تكون  قصة أخبرك بها أحد أصدقائك عندما كنت صغيراً ، أو خرافة حدثتك بها جدتك قبل النوم. ومن ثم سيقومون بتصميم صندوق حكاية ويصممون من خلاله عناصر هذه الحكاية الشعبية وتفاصيلها. ثم سنحتفظ بلحظة من هذه القصة في صندوق ضوئي بتقنية Lightbox من الورق المقوى، في محاولة لتجميد كل قوة الحكاية في صورة واحدة مضيئة. وسنلقي الضوء أيضًا على أشياء حول ثقافتنا وتاريخنا وتقاليدنا والقوة والفكاهة التي يمكن أن تعيش في قصة واحدة.
