Imaginary Realms Animation Lab

This immersive studio guides students through the full creative process—from imagining original worlds to producing a polished animated short film.

The journey begins with world-building. Students explore visual storytelling by gathering references, conceptualizing themes, and designing cohesive fantasy environments. Using the collaborative platform Miro Board, they will share ideas, build on peer feedback, and visualize their creative concepts together.

Next comes character design. Students will use Krita, a free digital painting tool, to sketch and refine original characters that belong to the worlds they’ve created. Simultaneously, they’ll write short narratives that connect character, theme, and setting—laying the groundwork for their animations.

In the following phase, students will digitally paint their fantasy environments in Krita, designing detailed backgrounds that bring atmosphere and depth to their stories.

With visuals complete, students move into 2D animation using Wick Editor. They’ll learn fundamental principles—like motion, timing, and transitions—and animate their scenes into MP4 video format.

Finally, students will enter post-production using the online editing platform Kapwing. There, they will add audio, special effects, and final polish to their films, learning the basics of editing and storytelling rhythm.

By the end of the studio, each student will have created:

  • An original character design

  • A digitally illustrated environment

  • A short narrative

  • A fully edited animated film with sound and effects

This studio builds creative confidence and digital storytelling skills—equipping students to imagine boldly and bring their ideas to life.
