In this workshop, you'll learn how to combine the art of paper folding with electrical circuit design to create a beautiful light-up origami sculpture that incorporates a paper circuit. The circuit will light up using kinetic movement, representing the idea of generating electricity through human effort.

Through this activity, you'll explore electronics in a fun and creative way while still utilizing paper circuit techniques. You'll be amazed at how you can create a functional and aesthetically pleasing sculpture using just paper and simple electronic components. Whether you're a seasoned paper folding expert or a complete beginner in electronics, this workshop is perfect for you. Instructions 

STEP 1

 “Exploring Electronics and Mechanisms”

 “Doing Circuits”

  • Prototype first with printer paper! Fold your origami and draw your circuit by hand on the back of the origami model, and then attach copper tape, while integrating the LED lights and coin cell battery.

Your folded paper can serve as the switch, design your pop-up sculpture such that your circuit goes from OPEN to CLOSED. That means that a piece of the copper tape should go from disconnected (with a gap in the loop) to connected (a complete loop). You will need to attach copper tape to the back of the origami model and use it to connect the LED light and coin cell battery in a circuit that is triggered by movement. 

Step 3

 “ Making the pop-up circuit”

  • Once you have tested your circuit, Using BRISTOL paper, fold and assemble the origami model according to the instructions
  • Put all of your components together to create a complete pop-up circuit. Create your circuit lines with a ruler and pencil before you put down the copper tape!
  • Test your paper circuit by gently articulating the kinetic energy sculpture. The LED light should light up.

Step 4

 “ Documenting"

  • Get a photo of your initial prototype and your final prototype in bristol.
  • Create a diagram that shows the circuit (with proper conventions) and how that circuit corresponds with your paper folding.
