Despite the label’s implications, Young Adult (YA) fiction is a literary genre that has gained increasing traction with readers and writers of all ages. This popularity can be attributed to several factors, including the vivid worldbuilding, clever and occasionally subversive use of literary tropes, and underlying themes of social justice that often characterize YA novels. The latter characteristic is particularly relevant to this studio’s aims. YA protagonists frequently follow hero character arcs that involve both personal growth and collective action against oppression or tyranny. Students in this studio will learn how to write their own heroes into existence. 

The first two weeks of the studio will facilitate discussion in a seminar-like setting. By reading and analyzing examples of YA fiction together, students will gain a foundational understanding of how these narratives are crafted. In-Studio writing exercises punctuating the discussions will enable students to begin engaging in creative practice. The final two sessions will function as a creative writing workshop. 

In this Studio, each student will write their own YA short stories, or alternatively a first chapter for a YA novel, and bring them for discussion and critique. They will then revise their drafts based on the provided feedback and present the final versions at a group reading.

 سيتعلم الطلاب في هذا الاستوديو كيفية اخراج أبطالهم إلى حيز الوجود، من خلال ندوات حوارية نقوم فيها بقراءة أمثلة قصص من ادب الشباب وتحليلها معًا ، سيكتسب الطلاب فهمًا أساسيًا لكيفية صياغة هذه الروايات. إن تمارين الكتابة داخل الفصل التي تتخلل المناقشات ، ستمكّن الطلاب من البدء في الانخراط في الممارسة الإبداعية. ستكون الجلستان الأخيرتان بمثابة ورشة عمل للكتابة الإبداعية. سيُطلب من كل طالب كتابة القصة القصيرة الخاصة به ، أو بدلاً من ذلك فصل أول لرواية طويلة، وإحضارها إلى الفصل للمناقشة والنقد. سيقومون بعد ذلك بمراجعة مسوداتهم بناءً على التعليقات المقدمة وتقديم النسخ النهائية في جلسة قراءة جماعية يوم العرض النهائي في آخر الورشة.
